Quite the story:
Being caught smoking constituted a $5 fine, so when a steward approached, the Russian dropped his cigarette through a hole in the floor to avoid being caught.
Not a result of Hertzian Waves.

Images from Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil Volume 1 — Jean Baptiste Debret 1768-1848. Volumes 2 and 3 are available on the site too but I didn't find them as interesting, depicting as they do the 'civilizing' of the natives.
