Of Aiery Atomes. (1653)
THE Atomes long, which streaming Aire makes,

Are hollow, from which Forme Aire softnesse takes.
This makes that Aire, and water neer agree,
Because in hollownesse alike they be.

For Aiery Atomes made are like a Pipe,

And watry Atomes, Round, and Cimball like.

Although the one is Long, the other Round;

Yet in the midst, a hollownesse is found.

This makes us thinke, water turnes into Aire,

And Aire often runs into water faire.

And like two Twins, mistaken they are oft;

Because their hollownesse makes them both soft.

History of Curling

Auld Daddy Scotland sat ae day,
Bare leggit on a snawy brae,
His brawny arms wi' cauld were blae,
The wind was snelly blawing:
As icicles froze at his snout,
He rowed his plaid his head about,
Syne raired to heaven a roupit shout,
Auld Albyn's Jove misca'ing:

Chorus—"Oh! for a cheery, heartsome game,
To send through a' the soul a flame,
Pitt birr and smeddum in the frame,
And set the blude a-din'ling.
