Brehm's Life of animals: a complete natural history for popular home instruction and for the use of schools (1895). With its many illustrations and breathless prose it makes for an exciting read. After the chapter on the Platypus (here called a Duck-mole) there is this intriguing paragraph:
The already described Monotremes should perhaps be followed by a recently discovered, unnamed animal of the interior of Australia. Its fur has a metallic lustre and it lives subterraneously. So far only one—and that, unfortunately, mutilated—specimen is known, and it still awaits a detailed description.I wonder what the animal was? Link…
